EMS (Emergency Medical Services) is an Irynian governmental healthcare organization which provides emergency care in health crisis scenarios. EMS dispatchers respond to texts, video, or voice calls, assessing the situation and sending the appropriate first responder to the correct location. Transporting sick or injured Irynians in critical condition can be extremely challenging given the city's crowded maze-like streets, and any delay increases the chance of complications or potentially even death. For this reason, it is more practical in most cases for EMS responders to treat patients on arrival instead of attempting to return to a healthcare facility. First responders are among the few Irynians authorized to use motorics, high-speed magitech-powered vehicles that allow a skilled driver to cross the entire island in minutes. Special emergency lanes on major streets are reserved for motoric drivers, and any pedestrians bold enough to walk along them might be forced to jump out of the way of a speeding vehicle. Once the first responder has arrived, they must act quickly to stabilize any mortally-wounded individuals present or, if necessary, cast a resuscitation spell. A very recently-deceased individual can still be brought back to life if a trained restorative magic specialist is able to reach them within seconds of their biological death; however, after two or three minutes of death, irreversible organ damage makes revival impossible. If the injury took place as the result of a violent altercation, a City Guard (formerly an Iryna PD officer) is also sent by dispatch to ensure the safety of the EMS responder as well as the injured individual/s. Although many EMS responders are trained in conflict resolution and/or arcane combat, their priority is always to treat the injured rather than engage hostile individuals. Individuals who require long-term care are directed to Iryna General once they can do so unaided.
