Subspecies

Subspecies (Corvidan: KOLDIRITAL) is an aspect of identity defined by an individual's genetically-heritable morphological characteristics. All the sentient persons of the Corvidan Archipelago are classified as a single species; that is, a group of organisms that can successfully produce fertile offspring with other members of said group through various reproductive techniques. However, Corvidans exhibit a degree of morphological variation that would not be possible in a non-magical environment, with basic anatomical traits varying widely among individuals. Corvidan society does not discriminate between persons based on their subspecies, but individuals with atypical physical characteristics, such as extreme height or nonstandard number of limbs, might struggle to exist comfortably in a built environment designed for the majority of body types.

Although body types in the Corvidan Archipelago exist on an infinite spectrum, with each individual being unique, there are widely-recognized categorizations based on easily-identifiable external traits. The most commonly used terms are as follows:

Many Corvidans exhibit traits of several of the above categories, and would be most correctly termed "mixed-subspecies". However, Corvidans typically identify with a single subspecies based on familial association or dominant physical characteristics. Two individuals with similar appearances might identify differently based on circumstance. For instance, a person with two parents, one elven and one human, might identify as elven if they had noticeably pointed ears, or as human if they had a better relationship with their human parent.
