Selwyn Argyris was the founding member of the noble Argyris family, who served as Champion of Oxana from 522 to 670. Selwyn was a magically-talented warrior and a cruel military leader. He was able to retain his position and extend his lifespan through the use of an arcane instrument of his own creation, the Sanguine Dagger. The history of the dagger remains obscure; the sole reputable source on its origins lies in the Argyris family records. These records were maintained by the family over the course of generations, so the author of the following passage is unknown.
Champion Selwyn Argyris, first Champion of Oxana, desired to place himself above every other mage in Oxana, to secure his spot as its second-in-command for the rest of his life. To that end, he created for himself in secret an arcane instrument which could draw the magical potential of his opponents into himself, both eliminating his competition and making himself even more untouchable. But his creation was imperfect. The magical potential stored inside the dagger did not last forever. After a period of days or weeks, the magic would leech out, turning it back into a normal blade. And so Champion Argyris, after achieving that prestigious title, grew complacent. Not realizing that his magical powers were waning, he accepted a challenge from a young upstart, and found himself soundly defeated. When next he tried to use his dagger, in a desperate attempt at revenge, the dagger refused to even allow him to hold it in his hands. There is no record of the dagger's use after this point in history. One can only assume that in disgust and disbelief, Selwyn Argyris disposed of the dagger, and it passed out of memory. The Sanguine Dagger's current location is unknown.[1]
The Sanguine Dagger was eventually relocated on Day 7 of Month 5, 1020, in the possession of Reiner, a former vassal of Selwyn's descendant Peter Argyris.[2]
