Iryna's upper platform supports what is known as the city's second level or upper level. The platform was designed and constructed by magitech engineers employed by the Kor'onen sisters in the early 900s. It was created to double the amount of usable space in Iryna and ameliorate the city's enduring housing crisis. Atop the upper platform are six[needs update] of Iryna's 12 districts: Hospital Square, Upper Old Iryna, Breakwater Bend, Theophanes Terrace, Mythril Mile, and Highpark. Although these districts were initially conceived of as an exclusive retreat for the wealthy, an increasing amount of lower-income Irynians have relocated to the upper platform. The platform is held aloft by 16 support pillars, each of which houses two elevators, the primary means for Irynians to access the upper level. These pillars are evenly distributed throughout the city, approximately one mile apart from each other. This made the upper platform's pillars an ideal location for the central communication cores that are used to connect SmartStones to the larger IrynaNet system. The upper platform itself is primarily made of concrete, with mythril cables and water pipes running through it to provide utilities to the buildings of the upper districts. To ensure the safety of those living on the platform, an arcane barrier wraps around its perimeter, preventing pedestrians from falling off. However, objects such as tree branches that breach through the barrier are at risk of compromising its efficacy, creating gaps large enough for short persons or animals to fit through. Any Irynian who discovers such a gap is encouraged to call the city's emergency code, so that magitech engineers can repair the barrier as soon as possible.
