The fashion industry in Iryna is characterized by the wide variety of body types which it must accomodate, and the unique challenges of procuring raw materials in a hyper-urban environment.
Wearing clothing is not legally mandatory in Corvidan society; however, it is considered indecent to display one's gentials in public, and persons with external genitalia are encouraged to cover them. Many Corvidans choose to clothe themselves even though it is not required, for aesthetic or protective reasons. Because of the Corvidan Archipelago's hot and humid climate, wearing too much clothing is considered to be a health hazard in the summer season.
Individuals in certain professions wear uniforms for easy identification and other practical reasons. For instance, healthcare practitioners dress in scrubs and gloves, which assist in maintaining hygeine and allow others to locate them in emergency situations. Government executive officials such as Parliament Representatives wear plain black robes; the Governor and Champion wear an additional purple over-robe. Historically, the city's leaders wore two types of over-robes in contrasting colors: yellow during times of war or other threats to the city, and purple in times of peace. Because Iryna has been peaceful for hundreds of years, purple has become the symbolic color of the Governor, the leader who ensures the continuation of that peace.
Clothing can be made from a variety of plant-based fibres, but by far the most common is hemp, which is also used to make non-clothing textiles such as sails and curtains. Other frequently-used sources are bamboo, coconut, pineapple, and banana plants. Fasteners such as buttons, snaps, and buckles are typically made with metal, but materials such as glass or seashell can also be used.
Although modern Irynian clothing is mass-produced, tailoring is still a valued profession to equally accomodate all Irynian bodies. Clothing stores generally have a selection of sample pieces that customers can pick from, then bring to an in-house tailor to be fitted to their specific needs. In addition, self-employed seamsters will create clothing from scratch for Irynians with more unusual or extravagant fashion preferences. Clothing also tends to be loose-fitting and/or easily adjustable. Because their clothing is so personalized, Irynians typically do not own a large amount of clothes, with the exception of the very wealthy, who flaunt their extensive wardrobes as a sign of status. Damaged clothes are typically repaired or repurposed rather than replaced.
