The Adventurer's Guild is an Irynian organization that connects freelance employees with part-time work. In the period before centralized governments, freelance mercenaries ("adventurers") were the primary providers of security for average Corvidans. In places like Septeiven without established law enforcement agencies, adventuring still fulfills this societal need. However, in Iryna, adventurers perform a wider variety of freelance work, most often acting as private investigators or personal security. The scope of adventuring work is only restricted by what adventurers are willing to accept money for. Adventurers are paid by the employer directly on a per-job basis, with the Guild merely acting as facilitators. The standard rate is 40-60 CG, not including tips.
The relevance of the Adventurer's Guild has diminished in modern Irynian society due to a variety of cultural factors. The IrynaNet has provided a means for potential employers to more easily recruit temporary employees without relying on the intermediary services of the Adventurer's Guild. The Adventurer's Guild was a valuable alternative to official policing due to the corruption and incompetence present in Iryna PD; however, following the creation of the City Guard as a more efficient and reliable law enforcement agency, the continued utility of the Adventurer's Guild is uncertain. Adventuring remains a culturally valued pursuit, with popular fictional narratives centering around the dramatic exploits of historical adventurers, but the modern-day profession is largely unglamorous. The inconsistency of adventuring job availability has led to most adventurers quitting as soon as they can find reliable full-time employment. With the pool of adventurers available to the Adventurer's Guild in steep decline, the organization has often resorted to matching employer pay-rates, doubling the adventurer's earnings at the Adventurer Guild's expense. At its peak, the Adventurer's Guild operated multiple offices in all 6 of Iryna's ground-level districts, but due to budgetary constraints, its only remaining location is its Parliament Park headquarters.
Because of the informal nature of employment at the Adventurer's Guild, with no third-party oversight or written contracts, it has been repeatedly identified as vulnerable to exploitation for illegal activities. For instance, fictional job offers can be posted and filled by the same individual, or by co-conspirators, for the purpose of laundering money. Additionally, employers may offer money in exchange for performance of criminal acts, including but not limited to burglary, espionage, intimidation and stalking. Both employers and employees can remain anonymous, thus avoiding any connection to crimes committed. Still, the majority of Adventurer's Guild employment is legitimate, and adventuring is not generally considered to be an inherently unlawful profession.
