Parliament refers both to the judiciary government of Iryna and the building in which it is headquartered. The Parliament building is located within the Parliament Park district, at the center of a plaza where the majority of government announcements and other official events are held. Parliament is a 22-member legislative assembly, consisting of 2 Representatives from each of Iryna’s 12 districts[needs update], with the exception of Highpark. Parliamentary elections are held every 2 years, and only residents of a particular district are eligible to vote for that district’s Representative. There are no limits to the number of terms that a given Representative can serve, and no restrictions on who can run for office, so long as they are eligible to vote themselves. Of a district’s Representatives, the one who has served for a shorter term is often referred to as its Junior Representative, and the one who has served for a longer term is called its Senior Representative. However, no official distinction exists between Junior and Senior Representatives. All Parliament Representatives have equal authority to propose new laws or modifications to current laws, which must be approved by 12 of the 22 Representatives to take effect. Iryna’s District Courts are subordinate to Parliament, which also functions as the city’s highest judicial court of appeal.
