Linna Aslar is the inventor of the SmartStone and the founder of the SmartStone Company. Linna was born to the Aslar noble family in Oxana in the year 944. Frustrated with what they perceived to be a stagnant and regressive social order, Linna believed they could more fully realize their potential in the city of Iryna. To that end, Linna emigrated to Iryna at the age of 16 to attend IMI, entering the school's Magitech Engineering program. Linna became fixated on replicating the function of a spell known as Memorandum, which allowed mages to communicate telepathically. The spell was incredibly simple to cast, but contained many restrictions that limited its utility: it could only target one other individual, the physical distance between target and caster had to be relatively small, and the length of messages was fixed on only a few seconds. Linna sought to create a magitech device that addressed those shortcomings: equally simple to use, but able to transmit an unlimited amount of information across long distances. Linna's breakthrough was in realizing that it would be far more efficient for such devices to connect to a central network rather than establishing discrete connections between individual devices. However, such a network would require an amount of infrastructure that Linna could not create on their own.
Linna's magitech device was still in the early prototype stage by the time they graduated in 964, far from a product that could be produced and distributed on a city-wide scale. In the late 960s, Iryna was finally beginning to recover from a sharp economic downturn. The city government was looking to invest in nascent magitech which could potentially lead to a flourishing industry that could carry Iryna to new heights. Linna was able to secure funding to continue developing the SmartStone after leaving IMI, hiring additional engineers to help refine their prototype into the first SmartStone model and figure out the logistical requirements to maintain the IrynaNet. After almost a decade of additional work, the SmartStone Company opened its first public storefront in the Oceanview district in 973. The initial public reception was mixed: the device was a significant financial investment, and without many other SmartStone users to connect with, the device was not a very practical tool for everyday communication. However, as their userbase grew and their features diversified, SmartStones and the IrynaNet became a ubiquitous part of Irynian life.
Linna Aslar was not one to take credit which they had not earned. The SmartStone Company was designed from its outset to be led by an executive committee of magitech engineers, each of whom contributed their own unique expertise. Although initially intended exclusively for transferring messages, it immediately became clear that the technology had potential for much more. To that end, the IrynaNet was designed to be as iterative and collaborative as possible, with users having just as much impact on its functionality as SmartStone Co. executives. However, Linna Aslar was the official founder of the company, and became the public face of SmartStone technology as it spread throughout Iryna. The SmartStone and IrynaNet were celebrated as one of Iryna's greatest inventions, and neither would have existed without Linna's initial research. As of 1021, Linna is still an executive engineer at SmartStone Co. and highly respected in Irynian society.
